First Aid Treatment For Sprains, Strains, Torn Muscles & Tendons

Important Information
• General treatment involves RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression & Elevation
• Patients should consult a medical professional to determine the extent of the injury and to ensure that no bones are broken

Patient Care for Sprains and Strains
REST - take the stress of injured areas and avoid physical use as much as possible
ICE - apply a cold compress to the injured area for up to 20 minutes; repeat this icing at least four times a day
COMPRESSION - wrap the area with an elastic bandage
ELEVATION - raise the injured area above the heart as much as possible
If the patient must use the injured area, tape or splint to provide stability and prevent further injury
Anti-inflammatory tablets or pain relievers may reduce the pain and inflammation
Encourage the patient to follow up with a doctor
